Mind your thoughts

By listening to negative self-talk we can sabotage our success, health and relationships. It’s particularly damaging when our thoughts are not in line with reality and we buy into irrational feelings that don’t serve us. We can’t stop thought entering our mind but it’s what we do with our thought that really matters. Working with Leading Women it’s common to hear them speak of guilt as a working mum. I get it – something I also once suffered with. When my kids were young and I was working hard to get great results, financial rewards, and to provide a lifestyle for my family, there were many times that I felt guilty for not being at home more often. After several years of playing victim in my own mind, I asked my then 14 year old son, “Tell me what you felt when I was at work and what you missed out on?” I wanted to explore how I may have affected him and how I could repair any damage done. He looked at me, clearly puzzled and said, “What do you mean?” I pushed further, searching for his emotion, to find nothing. This was not his reality. The reality was he was ok and the fear and…

Work with people you like

Sometimes we think we have lost our mojo, but all we may need is to work or spend time alongside people with similar values and vision who are, best of all, people we like. And like a relay race it becomes a combined effort, creating many benefits by teaming up! In first my book How To Have It All I explain that having it all is NOT doing it all. High achievers, living fulfilled lives: decide what are high value tasks and focus on these only decide what doesn’t need to be done decide what can be delegated have effective people to delegate to put systems in place to manage all of the above.  We can’t do it all – it’s time to delegate or stagnate! Then we are left to focus on the high value tasks. And even though we are capable of playing the game alone, working together can inspire us to achieve greater fulfilment and gain insight, momentum and energy by: leveraging success – pool your smarts getting there faster – more hands on deck mateship on the journey – work with people you like having more fun – celebrate success together! Being with the right people can be a cherished and unforgettable…

The indecision zone

Life is full of decisions – hundreds every day. And although many are simple, we waste precious minutes by taking more time than necessary to make a decision, which equates to hours of procrastination each year. This self-inflicted delay slows our progress and hinders our fulfilment. The gap between a decision required and a decision made can be costly with many opportunities lost in the indecision zone. Making a decision can sometimes be tricky. We wonder…is it the right thing? Is it the best time? What will others think? Do I need to do this? But there is a more helpful question to ask…will making this decision move me in a direction aligned with my values? If the answer is yes then decide without delay! In retrospect every decision won’t always end up being the right one. In the words of Theodore Roosevelt in any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing. These four Ds make sure we don’t settle: 1. DECISION – be active and not passive2. DIRECTION – move forward in a direction aligned with your values3. DISCILPINE – act with discipline and commit to…

Gifts of life

Wanting something and then making it a reality will dramatically transform both your personal and professional life. The habit of deciding on, planning for and receiving what you want can mean the difference between a mediocre life and the greatest, most fulfilled life. But wishful thinking alone is not enough. These three steps can assist to make your dream a reality: 1. Decide what you really want2. Plan how you are going to get there3. Stay focused and persist until you arrive. And although that may sound simple, in theory it takes the right mindset too. There are thousands of decisions made each day – imagine the impact on your success if our attitude sabotages our decisions. It’s important to say, “how can I”, by focusing on what we want, rather than saying, “this is why I can’t” and focusing on everything from the past and excuses that paralyse the action required to get going. It’s about making the best choice – which doesn’t include making no choice. Often we unconsciously default to a “why I can’t” – a habit that prevents success. If you decide to remain wishful in your thinking, to take no action, you can expect, in 12 months time, your life to be the same as it is today. An extraordinary life of having…
