By listening to negative self-talk we can sabotage our success, health and relationships. It’s particularly damaging when our thoughts are not in line with reality and we buy into irrational feelings that don’t serve us. We can’t stop thought entering our mind but it’s what we do with our thought that really matters.
Working with Leading Women it’s common to hear them speak of guilt as a working mum. I get it – something I also once suffered with. When my kids were young and I was working hard to get great results, financial rewards, and to provide a lifestyle for my family, there were many times that I felt guilty for not being at home more often. After several years of playing victim in my own mind, I asked my then 14 year old son, “Tell me what you felt when I was at work and what you missed out on?” I wanted to explore how I may have affected him and how I could repair any damage done. He looked at me, clearly puzzled and said, “What do you mean?” I pushed further, searching for his emotion, to find nothing. This was not his reality. The reality was he was ok and the fear and guilt was all in my mind and it was time for me to fix my thinking.
As a mentor, I know the challenges working parents face. We need to ensure that we manage our negative self-talk and that we are putting our energy and focus where it needs to be. The last thing we need is to allow our negative self-talk to get in the way of creating time and energy for our best health, relationships and wealth.
When it comes to living a fulfilled life, mindset matters.
